The expectations for learning in the core subjects of Math and English are established so that students reach high school with a firm grasp of the processes for figuring solutions and making mathematic determinations and are also able to analyze and communicate about information. These skills are developed from kindergarten through high school and Math and English are the subjects of the secondary level province-wide assessments as they are considered critical to success in all other learning.

- EcoSchools - The PVNCC District is taking part in the EcoSchools Program which provides environmental education for students while requiring the schools to implement environmental policies which lead by example. This combined approach helps students understand the impact of learning and social initiative in providing for the future.
- Community Presenters - The Kawartha Pine Ridge District has established a searchable database of community members who are willing and able to present lessons and talks to students. These presenters are members of the community who are able to share some insight or ability with students that enrich their understanding of a topic or open them to a new way of thinking. This is a growing resource that welcomes additions from community members.
- Arts Events - The Kawartha Pine Ridge District supports a number of artistic events for student artists, their family and friends. The district has established connections with a performing arts festivals, student film festivals, art exhibitions, and musical performances. Students can find opportunities to perform and exhibit as well academic enrichment to support their artistic goals.

High school is the final step, for many teens, before they feel they are adults. This can prove to be a scary time, but there are ways for a parent to help make this transition easier. First, encourage communication. This can be between the teen and the parents, or with their peers. Just help them to realize the importance of education to their lives and the opportunities that arise from this time. Also help them to realize the new opportunities that are available, either through activities, volunteering or even a job. The most important thing for parents to realize is even though these teens may want to appear independent, keep the lines of communication open so they can come to you with good things or with concerns.
