Clifton District and Curriculum

Students in Clifton have an education that is guided by an objectives based curriculum which emphasizes key topics in core subjects and deepens student knowledge each year. Various extracurricular activities, including clubs and athletic teams, offer children further opportunities for personal growth. By involving the community in their educational programs, the district encourages strong ties between students and the community in which they live. As a result, students are college and career ready upon their graduation, and have the skills they need to be successful in whatever endeavors they undertake.

We currently cover the following Clifton-area school district: Mesa County Valley School District 51.

Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Clifton District Curriculum

The Math curriculum begins by introducing students to numeracy and basic operations, patterning and algebraic principles, shape recognition and the basics of measurement, and different ways to analyze quantitative data. Math students work with geometry, learning how to measure angles, as well as classify shapes based on the properties of their lines and angles. Students must be able to explain volume formulas and solve problems using those formulas. Students must also acquire the ability to apply geometric concepts to explain models.

The arts curriculum helps students develop their artistic side and learn how to appreciate and understand different works and medium of art. Students examine the various styles of art and analyze their impact on the historical development of the visual arts. The cultural elements of art are examined as well. Students identify social and political themes that appear in art.

Chalk Talk: Gap Years

Many parents, when they hear the term “gap year,” instantly balk. They assume a gap year means their child will spend a year partying and avoiding responsibility. A well-planned gap year aims to accomplish the exact opposite; it’s an opportunity for a high school graduate to have formative experiences that can greatly increase their viability as a college student. Many gap years involve volunteering and community service. Some include study abroad or subject-specific learning. Some involve experiences specifically intended to encourage self-reliance, self-confidence, and maturity in students. Most gap years involve a mix of these and other experiences, from work, internships, travel, and the like.
