Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Clifton District Curriculum

English Language Arts on the elementary level focuses on ensuring that students are exposed to a range of texts and tasks. Students work with a variety of materials to gain and increase reading, writing, speaking, listening and language skills. Elementary students learn the basic mathematical concepts as well as fractions, geometry and algebraic thinking. Students in middle school continue to develop algebraic thinking and also study geometry and the number system. In high school, students continue to study algebra, geometry and calculus.

Science in elementary school consists of exploration through hands-on activities as well as other experiences. Middle school students develop their knowledge of the scientific method through experimentation and other learning methods. In high school, students work with data collected through experiments and also found in a variety of sources. There is also a major focus on technology and how science and society interact. Overall, scientific literacy is one of the goals of the learning program.

Chalk Talk: The Importance of Physical Education

Students learn a great deal from Physical Education, beyond how to play sports. Children learn the importance of exercise, which is essential for health and physical well-being. Besides being important, children learn that exercise can be fun as well. They also learn to cooperate with others in small and large groups. Many P.E. courses cover health and safety issues which adds to the child’s personal education.
