Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Clinton District Curriculum

Since the 2013-2014 school year, the full implementation of the Common Core Standards has led Clinton Public Schools. Curriculum and instructional methods are aligned and guided by the CCSS. Beginning in primary and intermediate school, students explore a variety of academic content areas such as mathematics, reading, language arts, science, and social studies. Those subject areas along with world languages, technology, and business education carry through high school with advanced learning being provided. A variety of elective coursework in the arts, technology, and career-related areas are also offered at the high school level to connect students with subjects of interest.

The overarching goal of the curriculum is to challenge students to take an active role in their learning. Students who are independent and take charge of their own learning are more likely to do the same in their own lives. The school also encourages community involvement in the hope that students will become engaged citizens.

The original seven include verbal/linguistic, mathematical/logical, spatial/visual, musical, kinesthetic, intrapersonal, and interpersonal - spiritual and naturalistic were added later. People with strong musical intelligence are good with rhythm and sounds. They can recognize musical patterns, are good at remembering songs, and have a deep understanding and appreciate for musical composition and performance. Potential career choices are those in the musical field including singers, composers, conductors, musicians, or songwriter.
