Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Clinton Township District Curriculum

The New Jersey Core Curriculum Content Standards and the Common Core State Standards are the primary driving forces behind curriculum development in New Jersey. Students in both districts are required to demonstrate proficiency in nine core subject areas, including technology, 21st Century life and careers, visual and performing arts, health and physical education, social studies, world languages, science, language arts and math.

In order to prepare students for success in our highly technological world, all students undertake a study of technology and its applications in education, careers and life in general. The critical thinking and problem-solving strand of the technology curriculum seeks to help students understand how technology can be used to solve a wide variety of problems. Students identify ways in which technology can be used to resolve issues in their family, their community or in the environment around them. Students examine the interactions of humans and technology, and identify the positive and negative impacts technology has on the population.

Chalk Talk: Great Reasons to Read

The adage “practice makes perfect” applies to many tasks, and reading is no exception. Kids who struggle with reading will only get better with time, effort and practice. However, reading has many other valuable benefits. Kids who read often have improved vocabularies, more active imaginations and display greater capacity for creativity. Reading helps improve concentration, which leads to better study habits and better grades. Reading is also a great way for a child to escape the stresses of the day and relax. Research shows that reading slows down the heartbeat, reduces blood pressure and allows the muscles to relax. Even if your child doesn’t need practice reading, encourage them to pick up a book and reap the many other benefits reading provides.
