Chalk Talk: Value of Early Childhood Education

Many public school systems are incorporating early childhood education programs into their curriculum. These programs typically serve pre-K students that are four years of age. Children that participate in pre-K programs reap a variety of benefits. Academically, students that participate in pre-K gain much needed skills that prepare them for success in elementary school. Pre-school is full of literacy and numeracy activities that build crucial skills for kindergarten readiness. Pre-K students acquire enhanced social skills as well. The cooperative learning environment found in most pre-K programs teaches kids how to share, how to take turns, and how to respect the space of others. There are emotional gains as well. By participating in a pre-K program, children learn how to be more independent and how to manage and express their emotions appropriately.
