Chalk Talk: Fostering Resiliency in Your Child

Life is full of both joys and obstacles, and children are not immune to these realities. But children need the parents and adults in their lives to teach them healthy ways to cope with issues as they arise and develop the skills of resilience needed to manage the stressors of adulthood. Here are a few ways to act as a resiliency role model for your child. First, keep calm. Children tend to observe the way an adult responds to a difficult situation to determine their next move. A calm, practical response from adult can be just what that child needs to gain a better understanding about an issue, such as the death of a family member, a personal loss, or a local tragedy. Second, find small ways to encourage your child to escape their comfort zone. Stimulating their stress-receptors in smaller, manageable situations will help them build stamina for those larger unexpected stressors in life. Lastly, build on their sense of self. Remind your child that s/he has everything needed to handle any situation that comes their way. Your words are powerful keys to open the door to developing your child’s own inner strength.
