Clovis District and Curriculum
The public schools in the city of Clovis are under the jurisdiction of the Clovis Municipal School District. The district has created a goal to have all students meet or exceed the levels for proficiency in reading and math by the year 2014 according to the Adequate Yearly Progress measurement. Each student is asked to set individual goals that are challenging according to their individual abilities and aspirations. The Clovis Municipal School District is implementing the Common Core Curriculum which sets standards for public schools across New Mexico.

Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Clovis District Curriculum
Common Core is geared at ensuring that all public schools in the state of New Mexico have the same level of educational excellence. The standards apply to English & Language Arts and Mathematics. The District is committed to having each student in the district achieve success and literacy in all of the core curriculum subjects but specifically in math and reading. The core curriculum subjects include mathematics, language arts, science and social studies. In English and Language Arts (ELA) students focus on developing critical thinking strategies in reading, writing, listening and speaking.
Students also learn the skill of critical analysis so they can demonstrate reading comprehension both in written and oral form. In mathematics students spend concentrated time learning core math subjects including computational skills, algebra, measurement, probability, geometry and statistics. There is a focus on becoming proficient in basic math skills and being able to apply these skills to higher math and in the real world.

Keeping Informed: Recent Clovis Educational News
- All State Band & Orchestra - The New Mexico Music Educators Association selects music students every year to perform in a concert with the All State Band and Orchestra. Eighteen students from the Clovis Municipal School District were recently chosen to perform with peers from public schools all over the state of New Mexico. The New Mexico Music Educators Association helps promote music education in all types of schools in New Mexico.
- Western Region Leadership Conference - Several students from Clovis High School in New Mexico recently attended the Western Region Leadership Conference which was held in Seattle, Washington. All of the students were members of DECA which is an organization for students who are enrolled in the areas of marketing, finance, hospitality and management. Hundreds of students from more than fourteen Western regions attended the conference.
- “The Ranch” - Students in the fifth grade at Ranchville Elementary School, known as the “Ranch” have recently been enjoying a variety of activities including a “Books & Bingo” event for both family and students. The evening involved family fun activities with the goal of increasing skills in literacy and numeracy. There was Bingo and popcorn and data collection which was then used to create a variety of graphs and charts.

Chalk Talk: Wacky Kids at the Denver Art Museum
The Denver Art Museum’s Education Department provides a variety of activities and learning programs for kids on their wackykids.org website. The site allows children to explore art at the museum and learn different facts about the exhibitions. The informational sections include learning about Japan’s samurai warriors, the Maya rainforest dwellers, the ancient Egypt mummy mysteries and fancy and fun chairs. There are also kid’s activities such as making masks, games, coloring, and other print out activities for kids and their families.
