Chalk Talk: How to Support English Language Learners (ELL)

Connecting with students new to English can become a barrier to teaching them effectively. ELLs have different life experiences and speak other languages. Many teachers feel overwhelmed, especially if they have not received adequate training in this area, or if they have never had experiences with other cultures. One of the first things you can do is to collaborate with the ESL teacher in your district to support a child’s learning. Many teachers are overloaded, but these steps will help you to become more confident with supporting the needs of a child. Also, seeking literacy programs that can provide additional help with reading can help move along the transitional period in language learning.
