Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Collierville District Curriculum
Shelby County Schools are making the Common Core National Standards accessible to all students through successful use of many programs. Two of these programs, Reading Plus and I-station, are being used to help provide individualized instruction in reading to students, to improve their skills through interactive learning. They also offer many choices in enriching activities, such as music and dance, visual arts and theatre, and world language. Administration and teachers are rolling out Common Core math standards, through their All Things Mathematics adoption.
The district offer many programs for multiple intelligences, keeping students involved and seeking their talents. These diverse learning opportunities include chorus, i-think, academic simulations, compass learning, book club, environmental club and a physical fitness club. All of these programs provide children with opportunities to excel in many areas, showing them a wider spectrum of ways we learn. Students are actively engaged in their learning and understandably enjoy school.

I just wanted to send a quick note to say thank-you! My son is very impressed with his tutor and looks forward to each session. What’s particularly amazing about this is our son has never really looked forward to math or school for that matter!

Chalk Talk: Help Your Children Succeed in School
Do you want your children to perform at their best? Do you want to help them WANT to learn? Make the learning real and set them up for success! First of all, your children’s brains should be kept primed for learning. Make sure your children eat a balanced breakfast when you send them off to school every morning. Pack a lunch with plenty of fruits or vegetables, some carbohydrates and protein. This means providing healthy foods, regular opportunities for physical activity as a lifestyle and an appropriate amount of sleep. When your children’s brains are fed by good nutrition, movement and a rebuilding period (sleep), your children will be ready for learning throughout the day. Making the learning real means taking advantages of life’s teachable moments and your children’s natural curiosities in life. These are simple tips, but they will go a long way.
