Chalk Talk: The Importance of English as a Second Language Education

For students who have only ever spoken English at home, ESL (English as a Second Language) classes are irrelevant. But for those who speak another language at home, going to school in English can be a challenge. It is for these children that ESL accommodations are required by the state of Pennsylvania. Students who speak a different language than English at home may not have the background to understand all that goes on in the classroom. And even if they understand basic English, word problems in math or cultural nuances are still often very difficult for students. They don’t have the English background to understand like a native. This gives them a disadvantage in the classroom because, while such a student may be very good at math for example, their math teacher may not know it due to the fact that they don’t understand the English words describing the problem, hence the child receives lower grades. For these and other reasons, ELLs or English Language Learners can benefit greatly from ESL courses provided through their school district.
