Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Colorado Springs District Curriculum

The Colorado Springs public school system is comprised of six main school districts covering 89 elementary, 75 middle,
and 19 high schools. A brief synopsis of each district’s unique accolades is presented below:

Academy School District 20

The District stresses the importance of parental involvement in the scholastic experience and offers programs geared to home schooled
students. Its dedicated traditional faculty and staff also provide an Academic Arts Academy for middle school students, elementary
through high school International Baccalaureate schools, and AVID (Advancement via Individual Determination) programs.

Cheyenne Mountain School District 12

The District offers a wide range of programs such as Early Intervention Preschool, K-12 Gifted Services, Title I Reading at identified
elementary schools, Instructional Technology in all schools, Honors Classes at the Junior High and High School, Advanced Placement
Courses at the High School, and School Within a School, the NOVEL Program (Grades 9-12). The District is also in the process of
developing its Long-Range Plan to develop a comprehensive map for continued educational excellence.

Colorado Springs School District 11

The school district believes in providing many program choices for students at all grade levels in order to meet the demands of the
21st century by providing individualized learning. The district currently offers International Baccalaureate programs for all grades
and individualized courses such as CORE Knowledge, Advanced Placement, a Gifted and Talented program, a comprehensive. Career and
Technology Education program, and the only public Montessori program for elementary age students in the region.

Falcon School District 49

The curriculum implemented by D49 is meant to prepare students for college and a career after their primary education is accomplished.
Implementing modern technology in the classroom is a major achievement of D49, and the district offers schools with Wi-Fi bistros,
multiplatform workstations, videoconferencing systems, meeting rooms, as well as an upcoming art studio and science lab.

Harrison School District 2

HSD2 believes parental involvement is a key to students’ success, and actively encourages parents to read with their students nightly,
promote homework completion, and provide timely access to school meetings and activities. HSD2 states its top five accomplishments as
recruiting the best teachers through its pay-for-performance salary structure, demonstrating increased student success through CSAP
scoring, maintaining financial responsibility, providing innovative leadership with its Year 2020 Curriculum Program, and providing
district accountability through manageable policies.

Widefield School District 3

WSD3 offers a variety of curricular and co-curricular programs such as Gifted & Talented, the STEP program, a sixth grade outdoor
education program, the Character Education program, and D3 My Way which is an online program for grades 1-12 that provides both an
online curriculum with as needed interaction and assessment by a district licensed teacher. The District also has provides for its
military community by hosting several programs such as full-day kindergarten, an outstanding preschool program, before and
after-school child care, deployment support groups, and award-winning junior ROTC programs.

Keeping Informed: Recent Colorado Springs Educational News

  • Falcon School District Teachers Receive Extra Funding for School Programs - Twenty-three teachers in the D-49 school district of Colorado Springs received funding for diverse academic projects. The funding agency, Falcon Education Foundation, aims to support projects that inspire novel thinking.
  • Colorado Springs District 11 to Enhance Student STEM Programs - The D-11 district is set to receive increased funding from an educational program within the Department of Defense. The District plans to use the money to increase STEM programs and next generation learning through enhancing classrooms' curriculum and technology.
  • Harrison School District 2 Receives Grant for Better School Nutrition - The Harrison School District program "Feeding Kids Better - Improving Harrison District Two Nutrition Services" was recently recognized by The Colorado Health Foundation for its innovation in promoting healthy eating. The program received approximately $160,000 to be spent over a 12-month period
  • CCC! Streaming Media is Becoming Employed at Academy District 20 Schools - New Dimension Media's educational program CCC! streaming media is being adopted by the school district to assist teachers by providing a diverse group of researched educational media supplements. The director for informational technology in the District, Michael Doub, also cited ease of classroom integration and video quality as a factor in the decision to provide the service to students.
