Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Columbia District Curriculum
The Columbia world languages curriculum includes learning activities that promote effective communication in a second language, as well as greater understanding of the cultures in which the language is spoken. Students operate on a number of levels while acquiring their new linguistic skills. They engage in repetitive and imitative activities that promote the development of vocabulary and understanding of rules of language. Students also participate in activities that allow them to develop conversational skills.
The high school physical education curriculum in Columbia focuses on skillfulness, motor learning principles, and exercise physiology. Learners take part in activities that promote the development of fundamental movements required for physical activity, such as those necessary to dribble or kick a ball, maintain balance, or make quick side-to-side movements. Students also practice various motor movements until they are able to reproduce them with mastery. Both closed and open skills are part of each student’s practice plan.

Chalk Talk: Three Reasons Your Child Needs to Read More Often
Reading is an essential skill that everyone needs in order to function at his or her best in society. Children who lag behind in reading skills face a number of obstacles in their adult lives, from barriers to employment to an increased risk of incarceration. However, children who improve their skills by reading often stand to reap a number of benefits. First, reading exercises our brains because of the activity required to coordinate eye movement, understand words being read, and making predictions about what will happen next. Keeping our minds active helps stave off many brain disorders, including Alzheimer’s disease. Second, reading opens the eyes of children to the world around them. They develop understanding for people unlike themselves, and cultivate a greater capacity for empathy. Lastly, reading helps children improve school-related skills such as concentration, self-control, and perseverance that will lead to greater academic success.
