Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Columbus District Curriculum

Columbus Municipal Schools introduce Language Arts by allowing their early learners to communicate through drawing, dictating, or writing. As they enter middle school, they are able to write arguments, including providing support to back up their argument. They also learn narrative writing and they use technology to help them produce and publish their work. The high school student learns ways to organize their writing and how to plan, revise, edit and rewrite.

The Mathematics education that students receive begins with the basics of learning how to write numbers to be a representation of how many is shown to a child. As they become older, these students learn about fractions, including how to divide them, when they are in middle school. They become familiar with algebraic expressions and how to find area and volume of an item. In high school they are taught how to work with vectors and matrices and how to work with units in their equations and how to work with irrational and rational numbers.

Chalk Talk: Early Literacy Development

Early literacy development is critical to the academic success of every child. At home, literacy development is one area of parental involvement in education that makes a big difference. Introducing children to a variety of books from different genres is important so they understand the value of different texts. Reading favorites with children is also useful because it helps develop close and critical reading abilities. Allowing the child's interests to guide book and subject selection is advisable because the first step in becoming a reader is enjoying it.
