Commerce City District and Curriculum

The Adams County School District use the Colorado Academic Standards as the guideline for the instructional process in all their schools. The Colorado Academic Standards cover all major subject areas and include the arts, health and physical education, personal financial literacy, and extended evidence outcomes. The different subject area framework take into account all the subjects that help a student to develop personally and academically and also provide objectives that will take them into their post-secondary years successfully.

We currently cover the following Commerce City-area school district: Adams County School District 14.

Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Commerce City District Curriculum

The standards based curriculum in English Language Arts begins instruction in kindergarten in reading and literature, composition and language. Students in the elementary schools study vocabulary, read fiction and nonfiction, and write for a variety of audiences and purposes. Over the years, these activities help students develop the analytic skills necessary to understand the purpose of different texts and to recognize literary devices used by authors. As students develop research skills, they also become able to evaluate the quality of information.

The Science curriculum helps students to see natural phenomenon in the way scientists do. They learn how to formulate and test hypotheses and how to communicate their observations and conclusions. Another component of the Science curriculum is its emphasis on technology and engineering, and other practical applications of the sciences. Students are also expected to see how technology, and other scientific knowledge, impacts society as a whole.

Chalk Talk: The Benefits of Cooperative Groups

When students work in cooperative groups more motivation is generated and the feelings of connection lead to positive group relations. Group members also learn from one another and more intellectual activity is created in contrast to independent learning. Positive feelings toward one another also help in combating isolation and loneliness and helping to build relationships and positive views of peers. Self esteem is increased through working with peers, and this increases with increased skill in working cooperatively. This method has also been proven effective with at-risk students and disruptive activity. The cooperative method can also develop social skills and empathy while at the same time providing an academic support system for low performing students. Groups of two or three should be the foundation of any cooperative program and give students the chance to become familiar with each task or skill before they are expected to handle more group members.
