Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Comox District Curriculum

The reading standards for literature and informational texts are presented separately; however, they each center on key ideas and details, craft and structure, integration of knowledge and ideas, and range of reading and text level complexity. Other categories include fundamental skills (including print concepts, phonological awareness, and phonics), speaking and listening, and language usage (conventions of English and knowledge and use of vocabulary).

Digital citizenship is an important aspect of the technology curriculum as well, with learners gaining an awareness of the ethical use of technologies. Students learn about responsible use of technology, including using technology in an ethical and respectful manner. Another focus is using the internet to conduct research and teaching students how to discern the differing quality of information they find. Technology’s impact on communication is also examined.

Chalk Talk: Different Types of Assessments

There are many different types of tests that students take throughout a school year and they serve different purposes. Understanding the different purposes can help ease test anxiety and understand the goals of the test. Early in the year, students may be tested to get a sense of where they are at and what strengths and weaknesses present themselves in a classroom. These are formative assessments, and are used mainly for planning. Data from these assessments inform whole-group instruction and help teachers monitor the progress of their class. Assessments at the individual level assist teachers in creating instructional groups, identifying necessary interventions and learning needs for individual students, and monitoring the progress of each child. At the end of the year, summative assessments demonstrate the proficiency a student has achieved in a subject and are used to ensure all students are achieving the goals.
