Chalk Talk: The Power of Public Speaking

Many students dread speaking in front of their peers, yet public speaking is a critical skill that we all need at some point in our lives. Not everyone will deliver speeches to large crowds, but in life and in work, speaking to groups of people is inevitable. Developing effective public speaking skills offers many benefits. First, good public speakers have a deep knowledge and understanding of language skills, from an understanding of proper grammar to the ability to utilize powerful words at the right time. Second, people who are comfortable speaking to crowds have excellent self-confidence and higher self-esteem than their peers. Lastly, having the ability to speak to groups of people improves one’s ability to have one-on-one conversations as well. The confidence derived from one’s ability to speak thus fosters improved interpersonal relationships.
