Conroe Independent School District uses the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills, the students’ learning processes and instructional assessment to plan their curriculum. Recognizing that not all students learn in the same manner, the standards allow for teachers to determine the best way to instruct their students so that they are all able to meet the goals set out in the curriculum. Teachers are able to differentiate instruction so that different types of learners are able to maximize their strengths.

Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Conroe District Curriculum

The Language Arts curriculum at Conroe School use reading and writing, at the same time, to ensure the students have a cross-curricular approach to learning. Beginning in kindergarten, children are encouraged to listen to a story and then to use the skills the author used to create their own story. This continues all through the years. In high school, students read the short stories to see how the author is able to complete an abbreviated form of a story, then they can respond to questions.

The Science Curriculum at Conroe Schools begin with children study objects from the point of view of seeing or touching what they can access easily. By the time they are in middle school, however, they take what they learn and expand on it as they study the Earth's layers, or the make-up of each of the planets. Then my high school, students can narrow down the field of science they desire to study. Some of the subjects include biology, medical microbiology, or even anatomy and physiology.

Chalk Talk: The Flipped Classroom

Parents may hear about a concept called the flipped classroom and wonder what it is. In this method of teaching, the teacher creates videos of lectures and the child watches the lecture at home on their computers. The advantage of this method is that a student can pause the video or rewind over sections they are not understanding. Parents can also watch the videos and see what it is that the student is learning. The classroom time is now spent on active learning. Students will take part in question and answer or active learning time. Teachers also have more time, with this method, to spend one-on-one with students. This method helps utilize the home environment while giving the educator the time to solidify the education of each child.
