Chalk Talk: Things Teachers Want From Parents

Many educators have more things to do than they can possibly do in a day. Parents can help make their days a little easier so they can spend more one-on-one time with the children. One way to help both the teacher and the child is to take time to read to the child every day. By doing this, the child sees how important reading and education are to the parent and so reading will become more important to the child. Another way to help is to take time to get involved at the school. This may mean taking time to go to parent meetings, or volunteering in the child’s activities or the classroom. Finally, help the child to see the importance of learning every day. When shopping, ask the child to estimate how much the total will be or to count the change. When baking, invite the child to watch as they see fractions, following instruction and science come to life. Each of these items will show the child education in many different ways and are another of many ways that the child will see a connection between the parents and the school.
