Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Corsicana District Curriculum

The Social Studies curriculum at Corsicana Schools helps students learn about the major events throughout the world. The students learn through lectures, computers, films and field trips. When they are in high school the educators integrate world history, geography, economics, government, citizenship, culture, science and technology to help the students have an all-encompassing view of the world and the events that have gone into the history of the world.

Writing is part of the Language Arts curriculum and at Corsicana Schools students begin to learn how to write from the first day of school. When they begin on their adventure, students learn how to create letters, words, sentences and more. By the time they are in middle and high school they are prepared to learn how the literature they read can help them with their writing. They read literary works to understand allusion, alliteration, simile and hyperbole. They then observe media to find how to write negative and positive persuasion regarding their own views.

Chalk Talk: Helping Children Become Successful Readers

Reading is used in almost all parts of a child’s life. Parents can help by making sure that their children find enjoyment in reading. First, help them choose books that are at the child’s reading level. If a book is too difficult or too easy the child will want to give up. When they have the book, take turns reading. Also ask the child to predict actions on the next page, then if the prediction is not accurate, ask what would have happened if the prediction were true. With these activities, the child will be well on the way to becoming a successful reader. Also, be sure to introduce your child to different genres from nursery rhymes to short stories to magazines like ‘Highlights’ or ‘Ranger Rick’. These help kids develop an interest in non-fiction which they will draw upon during their elementary school years.
