Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Cortez District Curriculum

The health and physical education curriculum in Cortez provides students with valuable knowledge and skills that promote fitness, proper nutrition, and overall health and safety. In addition to taking part in physical training that promotes muscle development, coordination, and flexibility, students learn the benefits of getting enough rest, staying hydrated, and exercising. Throughout their K-12 career, students learn about the skeletal system, the cardiovascular system, and the muscular system, and learn ways to keep those systems functioning at their best.

The high school language arts curriculum involves an in-depth study of American literature. Students gain an understanding of various types of writing, including expository, persuasive, and informational. Students learn how to analyze complex texts for meaning, and how to support their interpretations with textual evidence. Speaking and listening are also central components of the curriculum. Students engage in small group and class discussions about texts.

Chalk Talk: Benefits of Extracurricular Activities

School doesn’t have to be only about going to class and doing homework. Children in all grades are offered many to learn and grow outside the classroom. Students learn how to prioritize tasks and manage their time by participating in extraucrricular activities. Out-of-school activities also spark curiosity in a wide range of interests. Relationship building is another important benefit of participation in activities. Children can make friends with other kids they might not otherwise have contact with, and can find positive role models in event sponsors and coaches. For older students, participating in a wide variety of activities looks great on a college application, and demonstrates that they are well rounded. Whether in elementary, middle, or high school, extracurricular activities provide many benefits for children.
