Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Coshocton District Curriculum

Coshocton’s science curriculum culminates in high school with the study of physics. Physics students study a number of scientific domains, including energy. Learners develop an understanding of various forms of energy, including that which is gravitationally and nuclear based, as well as the conservation of energy. Students also explore forces, momentum, and motion, including Newton’s laws. Students identify the differences between static and kinetic frictional forces, and examine centripetal forces.

Middle school and high school students in Coshocton also have the opportunity to learn a second language. The world languages curriculum is structured such that students learn basic linguistic skills that prepare them to become proficient speakers, listeners, readers, and writers in a language other than their native tongue. In middle school, this means developing an understanding of common words and phrases, and mastering appropriate pronunciation and word usage when speaking their newly acquired language.

Chalk Talk: How Technology Is Used in the Classroom

Implementing technology in the classroom has opened up a whole new world for today’s students. Whereas just a decade ago students were more or less confined to instructional materials like PowerPoint presentations and textbooks, today they have access to tablets, laptops, online texts, and a vast array of web-based educational tools that take learning beyond the classroom walls. Students are able to collaborate with one another and with students across the globe. Technology also allows children to take charge of the learning process, thus increasing their level of understanding and depth of knowledge. The individual pacing of learning via technology is also a boon for students who can learn at their own pace and sequence their learning in a manner that makes most sense to them. It is for these reasons that technology has become a vital component of today’s classroom. It helps students learn and grow, while also providing them with essential understanding of technological tools that will help them be successful in college and the workplace.
