Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Coventry District Curriculum

At Coventry, strong curriculum leads to improved comprehension of core concepts. During elementary school, students benefit from focused units. The Math curriculum focuses on addition, subtraction, time and money, geometry, fractions, and measurement. These lessons transition to introductory geometry and methods for analyzing quantitative data. In high school, the courses in Algebra, Geometry and Statistics introduce students to more complex problem-solving methods.

In English, students learn the elements of literature, writing structure, and they begin to analyze informational text. They learn how to decode meaning through modeling from the teacher, shared discussions, and reflective and analytic writing about texts. Language based skills in word awareness and grammatical precision are also emphasized. The skills of reading, writing, and communicating are threaded through the curriculum to help students develop a full range of communication skills.

Chalk Talk: Strong Policy, Strong Environment

A comprehensive policy manual is an important component to having a system that runs smoothly. Policies regarding instructional practices, behavioral expectations, and other clear means of communicating the goals and policies of the district help to keep all stakeholders aware and on the same page. Many policies go unrevised and therefore become counterproductive. Districts such as Coventry revise and replace policies on a regular basis to ensure that all stakeholders are aware of protocol. This makes the system more transparent, safe, and successful.
