Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Covington District Curriculum
Geometry is one of the areas that fall under the Mathematics curriculum. This is introduced as children discover what characterizes various shapes and how these shapes can be found in everyday object around them. They then learn how to measure these shapes by their perimeter, mass and volume. As they continue through high school, these skills become the basis of geometry, trigonometry, and calculus. Students that graduate from Covington City Public School are citizens that have the knowledge to solve any problems that come their way.
The Reading curriculum begins with students learning how to read from the top of the page to the bottom and from left to right. After these basics, students begin to learn about different genres, and the parts of a story, including the author’s perspective. By the time they graduate, the students will have been exposed to a variety of fiction and non-fiction, including British literature and early American literature. With this curriculum behind them, the students will become life-long readers.

Chalk Talk: Fifth Grade Math
It is always good to be aware of the expectations a student is going to face each year. In fifth grade mathematics students build on the skills they previously learned, such as addition and subtraction. They also learn how to apply the order of operations in a math problem, including parenthesis. They learn how to convert fractions to mixed numbers and the other way around. Plus they learn the algebraic skill of replacing an unknown number with a symbol. These students should also be able to explain to their parents how to solve problems.
