Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Craig District Curriculum

The Moffat County School District has devised a well-formed curriculum that provides learning opportunities in a host of content areas. Among them is health and physical education, which is far more than learning how to play team sports or learning about CPR. Students develop skills that will help them make healthy decisions, resist peer pressure, and understand their emotions and behaviors.

Students in Craig have the opportunity to learn about science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) in an environment that combines these closely related subject areas. Children engage in experiential learning exercises that allow them to develop and practice STEM skills, including field trips, lab experiments, and studies of local plants and animals. The district’s STEM curriculum is based on the Next Generation Science Standards, which provide linkages and closer integration between the STEM subject areas as well as increased rigor.

Chalk Talk: The Benefits of Reading Early and Often

Reading is a fundamental skill that is required for full participation in society. Yet reading has many benefits beyond its practical uses. Studies show that when reading, our brains are actually exercising existing neural connections and creating new ones. The ability to generate connections between daily life and book learning is formed, and used in all subject areas. The broad scope of reading materials help children to develop creativity and imagination, as well as empathy for the characters about which they read. Reading has also been show to have a calming effect, and is a perfect activity for a child that might have a little too much energy. Finally, reading early and often prepares children for school. Children who read a lot demonstrate far better concentration and attention, have expanded vocabularies, and improved spelling.
