Cramahe District Curriculum Used in Our In-Home Tutoring Programs

The Ontario Curriculum is used as the foundation for teaching, learning, and assessments in the local school districts. The curriculum specifies the learning expectations in all subjects, including elective courses and specialized programs, though maintains a strong focus on core academics. Each subject is framed as a trajectory of learning starting in the elementary years and moving through towards graduation. Once students are in high school they are able to make decisions about the pathway that they will be on, from choosing between academic or applied subjects and opting into programs that provide a specialized focus.

We currently cover the following Cramahe-area school districts: Kawartha Pine Ridge District School Board and Peterborough Victoria Northumberland and Clarington Catholic District School Board.

Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Cramahe District Curriculum

Literacy and communication are key components of learning, and the English curriculum is designed to support literacy in all subject areas. Students also develop valuable critical thinking skills which they are able to apply to other subject areas as well.

In Math, the curriculum begins with fundamentals of numeracy, measurement, data, spatial relations, patterning and other basic topics. In high school, the focus begins with a principles course in algebra, geometry and data analysis and students are then able to take courses within each area.

The Science curriculum starts off with learning about biology, earth and space, and structures and mechanisms. Students are prepared for their high school classes in Biology, Chemistry and Physics, Earth and Space, and Environmental Science.

Chalk Talk: The Different Types of Assessments

Students take many different assessments during the school year, and they are often used for very different purposes. When a teacher chooses to give a test early on in the year, the purpose of the test may be to provide a summary of what the students know and will help a teacher determine where to place their instructional resources. An end-of-year exam is designed to measure student proficiency in the content that was taught. Along the way, project-based assessments are a big part of the learning process and give students a chance to show both what they know and what they can do. Other sorts of demonstration-based assessments include oral presentations, published writing and authentic assessments.
