Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Cranston District Curriculum

As early as Kindergarten, Cranston students are learning mathematical concepts such as counting and cardinality. Moving through the elementary and middle years, students are introduced to foundational topics in algebra, geometry and data analysis. In high school, students are expected to not only learn mathematical concepts, but they are also required to be proficient in using critical reasoning in order to construct arguments that prove their knowledge of the subject.

In Language Arts, students learn a host of reading, writing and communication skills. Reading comprehension with a particular focus on word study and understanding of text features is central throughout the curriculum. Students read across the curriculum, meaning that they are introduced to non-fiction, scientific writing, and other styles of text. Writing is taught as a process, focusing on key steps so that students are able to fully develop their ideas. Listening, speaking and discussion techniques are also a part of the Language Arts curriculum.

To ensure that students will be equipped with 21st century skills, the Superintendent is supportive of Rhode Island’s commitment to Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM). Chalk Talk: Fiscal Transparency in Public Education

The economy is recovering, but public schools are still facing the challenge of doing more with less. In an effort to maximize efficiency and use funding dollars responsibly, districts such as Cranston are transparent in their budget processes. The district owes this to hard working parents whose taxes support district programs. Furthermore, accountability at the top shows responsible leadership to the impressionable minds who pass through the districts doors everyday.
