Chalk Talk: Helping Children with Autism Connect to the World Around Them

Autism is a difficult disorder to understand. It is even more difficult for parents, who may not personally experience Autism, to provide their children the lessons about life they truly need. One of the core problems of autism is that it prevents people from connecting with the world outside of themselves. The spectrum makes it even more of a challenge, because every person will interact differently and respond to social circumstances in a variety of ways. To improve essential connections, it is important that parents work with their children to foster growth. One of the best things a parent can do for his or her child is to be emotionally sound. Make sure that your attitude is positive, calm, and accepting. If your child cries, don’t overly react; simply demonstrate to them that their frustrations and disappointments are normal and healthy. Encourage them through responding to verbally and being aware of your physical positions to make eye-contact and communication easier. Giving your child as much control as possible is another positive way to give them power in their life.
