Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Crawford District Curriculum
An essential aspect of the CCSS is to teach students to be literate in all subject matter and to be proficient with mathematics concepts. From kindergarten to twelfth grade, students will also take courses in physical education, art, and music. At the middle school level, students learn in team environments to foster their unique social and emotional needs. Their courses increase in rigor at this level, as well, to prepare them for high school.
The secondary curriculum is designed to help students identify and meet their goals for college and career. Besides taking a variety of courses in the core subjects, students may also take courses in the arts, business, family and consumer science, health, physical education, languages other than English, music, and technology. Students with academic needs have access to special education and Academic Intervention Services (AIS). Available to students are Advanced Placement (AP) and college-level courses, as well as the Pine Bush High School Academy Program. This program provides hands-on, vocational training and consists of sub-academies, including finance, aviation, excelsior, human services, leadership and law, literacy and education, medical science, performing arts, and summer science.

Chalk Talk: Helping Children with Autism Connect to the World Around Them
Autism is a difficult disorder to understand. It is even more difficult for parents, who may not personally experience Autism, to provide their children the lessons about life they truly need. One of the core problems of autism is that it prevents people from connecting with the world outside of themselves. The spectrum makes it even more of a challenge, because every person will interact differently and respond to social circumstances in a variety of ways. To improve essential connections, it is important that parents work with their children to foster growth. One of the best things a parent can do for his or her child is to be emotionally sound. Make sure that your attitude is positive, calm, and accepting. If your child cries, don’t overly react; simply demonstrate to them that their frustrations and disappointments are normal and healthy. Encourage them through responding to verbally and being aware of your physical positions to make eye-contact and communication easier. Giving your child as much control as possible is another positive way to give them power in their life.
