The Texas Essential Skills and Knowledge (TEKS) is used as the primary curriculum in Cuero Independent School District. The TEKS provides the key learning objectives for students to meet in each subject and develops student knowledge in a progressive manner each year. The district also uses the college and career readiness initiatives developed by the Texas Education Agency to help prepare students for their next steps. Texas GEARUP (Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Programs) has a long history of helping students achieve their goals. In addition, Advanced Placement and Early College High School programs are now available.

Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Cuero District Curriculum

The English Language Arts curriculum helps students learn how read critically, write analytically, and engage in open discussions about texts and ideas. The reading strand of the curriculum focuses on developing comprehension skills and then teaching students about the craft of texts so they can see how the author creates a work with meaning. They learn about literary devices and how they influence their interpretation of fiction and also study how authors use language to discover bias in non-fiction.

The writing curriculum focuses on teaching students to write for a variety of purposes. They write analytically about the books they read and learn how to support their ideas about the meaning of a text. In doing this, they also learn how to properly reference and cite works. Students also learn how to write persuasively and develop a piece of writing so that it is cohesive and well-supported. Through their writing, they also learn proper grammar usage, language conventions, and how to express their ideas in a strong voice.

Chalk Talk: Developmental Characteristics in Adolescence

The teen years can be a time of great change. Parents need to know what these changes are so they know when to show concern. Physically, teens will go through rapid physical changes with variations that are due to genetics, the environment and health. During this time there will be distinction between male and female in size, strength and the age of the growth. This is also a time to watch for issues such as eating disorders, sexual experimentation and drug use. Social allegiances will begin to turn more and more to friends and less to parents and teens begin to interact socially without parents overseeing them. Finally, teens are able to reason more and can make choices ethically and morally, even though some of these choices will be affected by their social circles. With these guidelines in mind, parents can see that their teens are facing many changes that can leave them confused. Because of this parents need to leave the lines of communication open.
