Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Dalhart District Curriculum

The Science curriculum is organized to introduce students to topics and concepts in earth and space science, biology, chemistry and physics, environmental science, and engineering. Students are expected to understand how scientists arrive at and test hypotheses and theories and the process of scientific investigation. They learn how to create experiments and communicate the results. They also study scientific ethics and decision making and learn about how science is applied in different aspects of their world.

The English curriculum at Dalhart Independent School District includes the study of literature and informational texts with the goal of helping students gain necessary critical reading skills such as analysis, recognition of intent or bias, and an understanding of literary devices. The writing curriculum has goals that include teaching students to write for different purposes such as creative writing, persuasion or editorial writing, and analytic writing. Through both the reading and writing strands, students also develop strong language and vocabulary skills.

Chalk Talk: Goals of the Health Curriculum

The health curriculum centers in part on helping students develop strong interpersonal communication skills. Students participate in skits in which they demonstrate how to appropriately communicate with other people. Learners explore various strategies for expressing their emotions effectively, including using anger management techniques to ensure they can discuss their feelings in a calm and rational manner. Conflict resolution is also a primary area of focus. Students identify various means by which they can compromise with others to bring about an end to a conflict. Wellness and nutrition is also emphasized. Students review the various food groups and identify how much of each type of food they should intake each day. Learners also develop an understanding of what foods they should avoid, and explore what those foods can do to negatively impact their health.
