Dalton District and Curriculum

Dalton Public Schools have made a commitment to their students by believing that only when children are engaged in learning can they be successful. Based on this belief, the district works diligently to not only adhere to the Common Core Georgia Performance Standards but to develop a system-wide curriculum structure that aims at promoting ideals and values that are relevant to their students’ lives.

We currently cover the following Dalton-area school district: Dalton Public Schools.

Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Dalton District Curriculum

The K–12 curriculum is designed to ensure that all students will learn the same core content at specifically designated instructional levels, with a main focus on Language arts, Science, Math, and Social Studies. Within each subject area there is strict adherence to an overall literacy policy wherein students are required to read and write in each subject area. With this shift to a focus on literacy skills, the goal is to ensure that each student is successful.

Beyond their focus on literacy this district boasts an outstanding record for success in Mathematics and Science. This school system has gained its STEM recognition for integrating instruction in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. The curriculum is rigorous and requires students to not only think but apply their knowledge forming hypotheses, by designing and conducting laboratory experiments, and reporting on their observations.

Keeping Informed: Recent Dalton Educational News

  • Big Business - In the summer of 2011, four Dalton Public Schools High School Juniors came up with an idea to make a fill their wallets. These four entrepreneurs could not let go of the idea to start a business. Instead of simply letting the idea go, these students followed their simple idea and made it reality. The end result was Bowtie Brand. At first, the boys were just going to have some sort of clothing business and have a bowtie as their logo, but they finally decided to just make bowties. They launched their website last spring with nine cotton ties that they made once an order came in. Recently, they found a manufacturer in New York that is going to produce the ties. With the new manufacturer also comes a new product: silk bowties.
  • Breaking Barriers - Across America there is a variety of languages that are spoken daily this district is taking action to help break down the language barrier. With large populations of both English and Spanish speakers within the Dalton Public Schools Community, the language barrier is oftentimes a difficult thing to break. Students at Morris Innovative High School are working hard toward bridging the communication gap within their Schools and their community by using translation skills they have learned in their school outside the classroom. Thirty students at MIHS have begun working as translators within the community. They started by translating during parent teacher conferences and have continued to reach out the community at events such as health fairs, and even at Mohawk Industries. Starting this year the students will be helping translate at Hamilton Medical Center.
  • Market Champions - Students all across Georgia are learning economics and money management through participation in The Stock Market Game; this is a 10-week long exercise that takes place in the fall and spring in which elementary and high school aged students participate in a competition within the stock market to see which school comes out with the most money at the end of the exercise. At the end of the competition the Blue Ridge School team was recognized at the Dalton regional winners.

Chalk Talk: Family Time

Many families are extremely busy with work and sports and school and video games, and various other activities and this can come at a cost to the relationships that exist within the family structure. It is important for children to have quality time with their parents that do not involve video games or traveling to and from activities. Each week there should be a block of time that is designated family time and everyone should participate in an activity that the entire family likes, and spend this time talking and enjoying being a family. This helps children develop confidence, communication skills and family connections.
