Damascus District and Curriculum

Damascus schools help to prepare students for an ever-changing world by incorporating the Common Core State Standards with innovative teaching practices. The Common Core is a curriculum designed to prepare students for college and career goals, focusing in on key areas of communication and problem-solving and providing key learning objectives for students to meet to ensure they are becoming fully proficient in these skills through the lens of different subject areas.

We currently cover the following Damascus-area school district: Gresham-Barlow School District.

Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Damascus District Curriculum

The Social Studies curriculum for Damascus schools begins by introducing students to their school and community. After learning about the areas that the students are familiar with, they are then introduced to topics that they may not be so familiar with. When studying about settlers moving to Oregon, students are asked to think about advantages of living in the Oregon Territory. They then need to persuade the neighbors from the east, into coming on the Oregon Trail with them.

The literature curriculum starts by showing children that they can be different books for different subjects. Some of these books look at the topic from different perspectives while others may be different books by the same author. After this introduction, students are then exposed to a variety of genres so they can look for different literary elements. They may look at the book “Tuck Everlasting” to look at how different choices can change a life or, in high school, they may look at “Odyssey” to determine the traits that Odysseus needed to make it on his voyage.

Chalk Talk: Third Grade Social Studies

Third grade social studies curriculum may vary from state to state but overall, children will see that social studies will become a separate topic in their week. Generally in this grade students begin to study communities throughout the world. They will also learn more map skills and geography as well as economics and how money plays a part in the world. It is also a class in which students begin to develop their research skills, project planning skills, determine areas of interest about the world around them, and how the broader world impacts their lives.
