The Danville Public Schools help prepare student for the future and to be competitive in the future. They use the Virginia Standards of Learning as their starting point then allow teachers to form their in class lessons to fit the needs of their students while touching upon the relevant objectives within their subject. Common Core Standards in Math and Language Arts are also used and detail the main features of each subject and the objectives that students should meet in order to be proficient in the subject.

Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Danville District Curriculum
The Science curriculum begins by helping children discover science in things that they are familiar with, such as the life cycle of animals or the cycle of the seasons. They then begin to break the world down into smaller areas as they learn about energy, simple machines, plants, weather and the solar system. The Danville schools also ensure that the students learn about Virginia’s natural resources.
When students begin their mathematics education, the focus is on becoming comfortable with numbers. They learn how to count and write them, so when they go on to addition, they are prepared for it. They then progress to learn about decimals, fractions and negative numbers before they approach algebra, trigonometry or calculus in the high school. When they graduate, these students are problem-solvers that know how to work through a problem step-by-step.

Chalk Talk: What Teachers Would Like From Parents
A teacher spends a large part of the day with children; however, there are some areas of a child’s education that can only be completed by a parent. The first thing that parents can do is to read their child. This is one of the most important things to build knowledge in a child. Next, parents need to know what the child is doing in school. This can be done by staying in contact with the teacher, either by phone, email, or in person. Parents also need to encourage students to build friendships away from school. This can be done in many different ways like play dates or activities after school hours. Being a part of a PTA or school council will help the parent have a voice, and be an advocate for the children. Stay connected to the school by attending events, even if the child is not a part of the event. This helps the child create memories. Lastly, show your child that education is a valuable thing. Let them see you reading, or taking a class. Tell them about things that have happened at work or become closer through books or movies.
