Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Decatur District Curriculum
Mathematics learning in the early grades emphasizes foundational skill of number sense, computation, measurement and spatial recognition. Students build on skills and concepts, progressing in later grades to problem solving and reasoning skills to better comprehension and application of algebra, analytics, and mathematical models that assist in decision making for real-world application.
English Language Arts at all grade levels focuses on reading, speaking, listening and use of language, progressing to comprehension and usage of more complex reading and writing. Informational themes and short narratives are emphasized, giving students time and opportunities to demonstrate comprehension and language development. Writing includes the development and demonstration of argumentative, informational and explanatory skills. Reading and writing are integrated in all subjects throughout all grades.

Chalk Talk: The Importance of Special Subjects
So much of the school day and school night are spent on math, language arts, social studies and science. However, many students will say one of best things in school is music or art class. And how many times has your child said physical education is their favorite subject? Some of the best learning for students can come during these subject areas. Special subjects, or electives at the middle and high school grades, give students the opportunity to not only take a break from academic learning but also provide them the chance to learn what they like or may be good at other than writing or math skills. During elementary school, special subjects are required and incorporated through the school week. As students get into middle and high school, these “special subjects” become electives; students make their own choices of what to take. Encourage your student to try different electives that are not academic-specific. Guide them to use those electives in learning more about themselves as a growing individual.
