Deerfield District and Curriculum

The schools strive to encourage a collaborative and inclusive environment, integrating critical thinking, problem solving, reading, and writing for students while offering myriad assignments and curricular concepts. Faculty provide purposeful and constructive feedback to students and offer suggestions while still allowing students to make their own decisions. The purpose of this is to guide students to self-discovery in a safe, supportive, but rigorous environment in which students take responsibility for their own learning.

We currently cover the following Deerfield-area school districts: Deerfield Public School District109 and Township High School District 113.

Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Deerfield District Curriculum

The school districts believe that all students bring a sense of curiosity to the table which drives their inquiry. Everyone is capable of listening and respecting multiple perspectives when everyone feels safe to ask and answer questions. Students will then be equipped for their future as people who are able to understand and can apply a core body of knowledge and skills across the curriculum.

Students are required to be able to read for comprehension and synthesis and use a variety of techniques, resources, and technology to gather information. Deerfield encourages students to use critical and analytical thinking to solve problems and to transfer their acquired knowledge to life experiences. Students are also taught to be effective and thoughtful communicators who observe attentively, speak effectively, write clearly and expressively, and demonstrate good listening skills.

Chalk Talk: The Tone of a College Essay

Probably the most important aspect of a student’s college essay is the tone. The way the student says things is more important even than what’s being said. The proper tone is essential for a successful essay. Tone tells the admissions committee so much about the student’s personality, temperament, sense of humor, etc. Tone is how the committee gets to know the student. A simple listing of experiences in an essay is not only boring, it doesn’t really give much of a sense of who the applicant is, but the way the student relates those experiences makes them come alive—even if they’re experiences the admissions committee can’t share, the simple fact of the student’s enthusiasm or sense of humor can do a lot of work for the student. On the flipside, tone can impact an essay negatively if it isn’t the intended tone. This is why revision and having someone else read the essay are so important.
