Defiance District and Curriculum
Students in Defiance attend public school in the Defiance City Schools system. The overarching mission of Defiance’s school district is to provide students with the skills and abilities to achieve academic and personal excellence. Students come first in the district, as evidenced by the commitment of faculty, staff, parents, and community members to provide children with a safe and nurturing learning environment. Academic programs challenge students to develop the intellectual skills they need to be successful upon graduation.

Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Defiance District Curriculum
The English language arts curriculum helps students acquire the skills they need to be effective communicators. After developing basic language skills in elementary school, middle school students explore advanced studies in the language arts. Students learn how to identify key ideas and details of a text, including central themes and character development. Learners work on the craft and structure of their writings as well, with an analysis of how word choice and sentence structure can positively or negatively impact the meaning of a passage.
Students in Defiance take part in a social studies curriculum that includes an examination of modern world history. Beginning with a study of the Enlightenment and the Age of Reason, students examine how European populations challenged religious views of the world using new scientific ideas. From there, students analyze how the industrial revolution promoted sweeping changes in governments in the western world, including the spread of democracy as the middle class rose to prominence.

Keeping Informed: Recent Defiance Educational News
- iPad Initiative Pairs Students with Technology - Since 2011, every student at Defiance High School has been issued an iPad as part of the school’s one-to-one technology initiative. The purpose of the initiative is to increase competency with regard to the use of technology for academic purposes.
- Success Program Encourages Positive Behaviors - Students at Defiance Middle School can receive Bulldog Success Cards for exhibiting positive behaviors. Teachers and staff members give out the cards on a weekly basis to recognize kids who go above and beyond to help others.
- PTO Offers a Number of Activities - The Defiance Parent Teacher Organization puts on a number of helpful events throughout the year. Their yearly book fair allows students, teachers, and parents to enjoy new titles. This year students are encouraged to bring their grandparents to the fair.

Although music class is viewed as an elective course, it’s benefits for students make the case that music should be an integrated component of all K-12 programs. Studying music helps children improve reasoning and language skills. In fact, studies show that music education helps language centers in the brain develop at a more rapid pace. Music improves spatial intelligence as well, with children demonstrating an improved ability to form mental pictures. Problem solving skills are also enhanced through the study of music. Students that study music tend to perform better on standardized tests, including the SAT and ACT. Music also gives students a glimpse into other cultures and societies, thus promoting respect for others and an appreciation of multiculturalism.
