Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Del District Curriculum

In English Language Arts, the students are taught various strategies when reading non-fiction. Reading non-fiction serves many purposes, such as reading to learn new knowledge and concepts, reading for entertainment, and to develop comprehension skills. Students learn about non-fiction elements and learn to recognize headings, subheadings, captions, new vocabulary within context, and develop skills to figure out the meanings of unfamiliar words.

Mathematics has a wide range of objectives for the students of this school system. One concept the students must master is the concept of number sense. Number sense begins in the early grades and increases in difficulty as the students go from grade to grade. In the early middle grades, the students will compare decimals, order and convert them to fractions and percentages. The students learn about decimals, fractions, and percentages and how they are related when solving problems.

Chalk Talk: What Is Reading Recovery?

Reading Recovery is a program established with federal funds that helps young, primary-grade students that are struggling with reading get on an appropriate reading level. Students that have difficulty learning to read, particularly with phonemic awareness and beginning comprehension skills can receive the extra attention, sometimes one-on-one, to be the best readers they can be. Reading Recovery is a research-based, successful program for the students involved. The teacher that instructs the Reading Recovery lessons is usually trained within the Reading Recovery Program.
