While the district receives many honors for its academic work, students also enjoy a wide array of co-curricular activities that allow them to develop skills in the areas of communication, leadership, teamwork, time management, and goal setting.

Educating Our Parents: Understanding the DeLand District Curriculum

Students can take courses in anatomy, astrology, physics, and a wide variety of scientific areas. Many courses have a laboratory component that give students hands-on experiences with the opportunity to apply classroom knowledge in the field. Coursework focuses on identifying problems, investigating, and analyzing data. For instance, children learn how the traits of animals allow them to live in highly disparate environments. Mathematics, engineering, and computer technology are included components of science courses.

Electives give students the opportunity to develop their own interests, with some courses including internships in specific fields. Health science, human services, and hospitality and tourism courses are among the electives provided to students that can help them to further their potential careers. Electives in art, creative writing and journalism, computer technology, culinary arts, and foreign languages can be taken for college credit as well.

Chalk Talk: Learning Styles

The three main types of learning styles were discussed previously. Auditory, visual, and tactile learners all have different methods of absorbing information and some people can be more than one type of learner. These categories can be divided into smaller methods as well. For example, verbal learners are a combination of all three styles of learning. They may find it easier to memorize information if they can talk themselves through a process or write scripts that they can then act out. Logical learners need to understand the reasons behind the content they absorb. Creating lists with key points that help them understand how systems and topics are linked can be very helpful for them. Two other styles are social and solitary. These styles are already defined by their names; social learners prefer to work in groups and may enjoy role-playing and sharing what they’ve learned. On the other hand, solitary learners prefer to study alone and may need to have a personal interest in the topic.
