Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Delano District Curriculum

Delano’s middle school math curriculum includes an in-depth examination of algebra. Learners explore the concepts of independent and dependent variables and devise an understanding of the difference between them. Students also learn how to use linear functions to represent various relationships. The graphical properties of linear functions are explored as well, with learners identifying slopes and intercepts. Radicals and absolute values are also introduced. Students evaluate such expressions and note the steps required to generate equivalent expressions.

The English language arts curriculum in Delano seeks to help kindergarten students begin the development phase of speaking and listening abilities. Students participate in one-on-one, small group, and class discussions in order to learn the rules and procedures for speaking and listening. Learners develop an understanding of how to take turns to speak, how to raise their hands before speaking, and how to listen intently while others are speaking. Asking and answering questions as a means to propel conversations is a topic of study as well.

Chalk Talk: The Importance of Writing

Writing is a powerful tool. You can use letters to the editor, speeches, and articles to sway your audience. Because it is such an important aspect of critical thinking, writing persuasive content pieces is part of the curricula for various subjects. This quality is even measured in standardized tests. The first paragraph should contain your thesis, or the opinion you have and are writing about. The body paragraphs (steps 2-4) consist of topic sentences (the evidence you acquired), two sentences that comment or explain why your evidence supports the thesis, and a concluding sentence. The last paragraph with restate the points of the thesis, but don’t just rewrite the introduction paragraph. This paragraph is your last chance to appeal to your audience. Use emotional language and a sense of urgency. Your audience should walk away with a call to action or a new understanding of your topic.
