Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Delavan District Curriculum

Delavan’s curriculum includes a study of art and design concepts that promote improved visual thinking skills. Students evaluate art in the context of aesthetics as well as in the context of culture. Learners explore the meaning of art and the manner in which is created in a number of cultures. Similarities and differences between works of art from around the world are noted, as are the connections that the arts have to other cultural activities. The curriculum also focuses student learning on visual discrimination skills. Students analyze and critique various types of art in order to develop a deeper understanding of media techniques and processes.

The business curriculum in Delavan helps high schools students develop a clear understanding of financial reports. Learners prepare and analyze various documents related to owning and operating a business. Financial statements for sole proprietorships, corporations, and partnerships are prepared. Both spreadsheets and specialized accounting software are utilized in order to create reports. Students learn how to forecast costs and revenue, while also acquiring the skills necessary to track and make changes to budgets. Cash flow statements are discussed as well, with learners analyzing statements for indicators of a business’s health.

Chalk Talk: Packing for College

It’s not necessary to buy new items if you can help it, although it is easy to want to impress. Also, don’t forget to bring things that are easy to overlook but that are essential. For example, do you need a flashlight, batteries, a first aid kit, cleaning supplies, toiletries, etc? It’s easy to forget about these items in all the excitement of moving out (especially when you’ve taken those items for granted in the many years under your parents’ roof). Whatever you choose to bring or leave at home, one thing is of the utmost importance when carving your new path: make your new pad into your new home. While you’re not setting up residence for life, feeling at home will make a world of difference when you’re homesick. Also, it's important for a student to be prepared for their first few weeks at college.
