Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Delhi Township District Curriculum

The elementary Mathematics curriculum is rooted in the theory that a strong foundational knowledge is the key to long-term success in the subject. Students learn basic number operations until mastery is reached in addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. Teachers use a variety of teaching strategies and resources to achieve this goal including the use of technology to peak student interest. Other topics include measurement, money, pattern recognition, and geometry.

As students advance into middle school and high school, their Mathematics curriculum becomes more complex. The foundational skills learned in elementary school will then be used to expand into deeper topics such as Algebra, Calculus, and Trigonometry. Technology and the use of calculators will become increasingly important as students delve into these more difficult strands of Mathematics. Students will also apply new skills to real-life scenarios that will benefit them as they become adults.

Chalk Talk: Technology Education

Technology education has become a part of the curriculum in schools around the country. Most high schools are now requiring at least one technology class for graduation in order to introduce the subject to students before they enter college. Gone are the days when the highest tech class was keyboarding. Students can now take courses that range from basic computer skills to intricate coding classes. As technology has advanced, so have the course offerings for students. Students interested in certain careers can even take specific courses tailored to their interests. For example, drama students can take classes to learn how to operate stage equipment and engineering students can take computer drawing classes. While schools offer some very specialized courses, students can still take simpler keyboarding and operating classes to maintain their skills. As technology continues to advance, schools will adjust their course offerings in order to keep students in touch with the latest trends.
