Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Delran Township District Curriculum

Curriculum development in the district is governed by two sets of guidelines. The Common Core State Standards outline what students should learn in math and language arts at all grade levels from kindergarten to the twelfth grade. The New Jersey Core Curriculum Content Standards establish benchmarks for student learning in the following seven subject areas: 21st Century life and careers, technology, health and physical education, world languages, science, visual and performing arts and social studies.

The visual and performing arts curriculum is multi-faceted. In addition to teaching students the creative processes involved in the creation of art, students learn about the historical impacts art has had on culture. Additionally, students are taught appropriate critique methodologies. Students learn how to examine and analyze a work of art or art performance based on their adherence to genre-specific criteria. Students identify aesthetic qualities of exemplary works and analyze their impact on the development of artistic movements.

Chalk Talk: Why Parents Need to Be Involved in School

While it’s important for students and teachers to have a good working relationship at school, another large factor in determining a child’s success in school is the level of involvement of his or her parents. Students who have actively involved parents show higher achievement on tests and get better overall grades. Involved parents have kids who attend school on a more regular basis, regularly complete their homework and have fewer discipline issues while at school. And these improvements cut across racial, ethnic and socioeconomic backgrounds. In fact, the education level of parents seems to have no effect on their child’s achievement – the simple act of being an active member of their child’s educational process is enough to show marked improvements in their child’s performance.
