Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Denville District Curriculum

By focusing on learning opportunities that are relevant and allow students to apply their learning to real-life situations, the districts show students how to use what they learn. Aligning district curricula with the recommendations of the New Jersey Core Curriculum Content Standards and the Common Core Standards ensures that students have the tools they need to excel in their future pursuits.

By aligning the math curriculum from the top down, the districts ensure that students who move from the lower grades to the higher grades have the requisite math understanding to be successful. The math curriculum focuses on developing practical skills – problem solving, critical thinking and analysis – that are used in math class as well as everyday life. An additional emphasis is placed on student understanding of mathematical concepts, as opposed to rote memorization. For example, when learning about congruence in geometry class, high school students must demonstrate knowledge of the concept of congruence, but must also demonstrate understanding of the concept.

Chalk Talk: Reasons to Volunteer

Volunteerism is an excellent way to help your community while helping yourself. In addition to looking great on college and scholarship applications, volunteerism provides many other benefits to you and the community as well. Volunteering provides both mental and physical rewards. Research shows that volunteerism boosts mood, reduces stress, increases joy and benefits the immune system. Providing services to the community means valuable resources are saved. The monetary value of a volunteer’s time is over $15 per hour – money that communities and organizations can use to fund other needed projects. Volunteerism also brings communities together and strengthens the ties between citizens. Working as a team toward a common goal helps diverse groups of people build camaraderie, understanding and respect for one another.
