Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Diamondhead District Curriculum

Reading is shown to be an important subject area from the time the children enter kindergarten. At that age, they participate in Interactive Reading to show how the writing skills progress. They also take part in Literacy Work Stations. This sets them up to begin Accelerated Reading and then books such as “The Westing Game,” “A Raisin in the Sun” and “Canterbury Tales” before they complete their education. This progression aims at creating an appreciation for literature in each graduate from the school.

The Science curriculum starts by showing young children the wonders of the world around them and how each of the items are filled with science. This subject is broken down so students can study the topic in-depth. They are encouraged to use FOSSweb and Study Island to re-enforce topics they learn in class. When they advance to high school they will learn about biology, anatomy, chemistry and more, allowing the graduates to see beyond the surface of the entire world.

Chalk Talk: How a Third Grade Student Thinks

When a child hits third grade, it may seem that they are given more work than they can possibly complete. However, as these children have matured their ability to process mentally has also matured. By this age most students have the ability to face an equation with multiplication and addition and solve it. They also have developed logic, even though they can still be quite imaginative. When faced with a mistake, these students are able to work backwards to find where they made the error. These children can also look at two different objects and tell which is longer, or heavier. All in all these children are now able to see the world from other’s eyes, they realize that not everybody sees the world the way they do.
