Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Dix Hills District Curriculum

The reading curriculum calls upon students to develop comprehension and analysis skills in different genres of fiction and non-fiction. Among the goals are that students learn how to make predictions about what will happen in the future based upon the information they have read. Connotations and denotations of words, as well as figurative language and many literary devices, are emphasized as well, with students learning how to use context to derive the meaning of unknown words.

The curriculum assists students in learning by focusing on brain-based learning, students’ learning styles, and multiple intelligences; how to design instruction through understanding by design and differentiated learning; how to organize curriculum through curriculum review, design, and mapping; tools for instruction that include differentiated instruction, best educational practices, instructional technology, and instructional resources and materials; and assessments and data analysis.

Chalk Talk: School Supply Lists

These days, many schools send out school supply lists that contain mandatory items that students will need throughout the year. Of course, these will vary depending on the student's grade level. Elementary students may need coloring utensils such as crayons and colored pencils, crayon boxes, and folders. Middle and highs school students are usually required to bring binders to keep their materials organized and their notes all in one place. They will likely need to fill their binders with loose-leaf paper and subject dividers. Students of all ages will need to bring pencils; secondary students are usually allowed mechanical pencils and pens as well. Secondary students who carry their books from class to class usually need to bring book covers to protect their textbooks. Sometimes, teachers have each student bring in non-educational items such as tissue boxes to supply the classroom with these items. If parents have difficulty affording these items, they can work with their child's school.
