Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Donaldsville District Curriculum

The Ascension Public School District utilizes the Common Core State Standards and the Louisiana State Grade Level Expectations (GLEs) to form the basis of the school curriculum. In English and Language Arts, students learn how to read, write, speak and listen so that they reach the required literacy standards. The emphasis on literacy is further reinforced by applying these standards to all other core coursework. Students become familiar with both informational text and literature and learn how to read for evidence and evaluate sources. This helps prepare students for the type of reading material they may encounter in college or in the workforce.

In Mathematics, students learn core math subjects in a progressive manner building on their math competency year by year. Core topics include computational skills, algebra, geometry, basic statistics, measurement and proportional reasoning. The goal is for students to become math fluent and be able to know what math skill to use to solve a problem with confidence and to able to apply what they have learned to math problems in real life.
