Douglas District and Curriculum

The rigorous state standards designed and implemented in their College and Career Ready education plan has been put in place in Arizona schools and school curriculum that align to these standards are used in all K-12 courses. Each subject area has major topics that students learn about over the years – being introduced to the fundamentals during elementary school and then encounter more specialized learning in high school. Beyond core academics, the schools also have many programs and clubs to connect students with career pursuits.

We currently cover the following Douglas-area school district: Douglas Unified School District.

Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Douglas District Curriculum

The schools teach their students math skills that will allow them to conceptualize math problems and learn value placement and how to reorganize problems to get solutions. Throughout their time in school students are learning critical thinking and problem solving skills that build their quantitative and logical reasoning abilities. Mental math is a key skill which students learn throughout the grades so that they are able to think mathematically in real life situations.

The English/Language Arts curriculum is designed to teach students the basic reading, writing and communication skills and builds on new skills on previously learned skills. Students learn listening, writing, reading and comprehension skills that will help them to be successful after graduation. They also learn good communication skills, both oral and written. Schools are using a rigorous curriculum to ensure that their students are prepared to compete in the world that is awaiting them upon graduation.

Keeping Informed: Recent Douglas Educational News

  • Kartchner Caverns State Park - Visit the park and take a tour of the limestone caves. The caves have formations that are unique to this site. The tour takes an hour and a half so come prepared for some amazing sights. It is cool in caves so be sure to bring something warm to wear.
  • OK Corral - Visit the historic OK Corral and see the old west. Imagine yourself living in those times (without the gunfights). The old west is preserved in the buildings that stood so long ago and can take visitors back in time. This is a great way to connect the real world and its history to the media depictions of the era.
  • Bird Cage Theater - Visit the reportedly haunted Bird Cage Theater in Tombstone. Visitors can also walk the boardwalks of Tombstone, a town which is frozen in time. Visiting this locale can also help connect kids to the history they learn about at school.

Chalk Talk: The Importance of Pre-School

When it comes to choosing a preschool today there are different types to choose from. Some preschools do not offer any academics. They teach children through play so your child will not learn in the traditional way. Academic preschools teach the children through the use of traditional lessons that teach the ABCs and 123s. Children can expect to have a scheduled nap-time and snack time and begin to develop other routines to prepare them for the kindergarten classroom. Check into the preschools in your area. Visit them and meet the teachers. Take a tour and ask a lot of questions. Take your child with you on a visit to see how he or she reacts. There really is no right or wrong here. What matters is which school you and your child feel most comfortable with.
