Chalk Talk: Mentoring Programs Improve Student Success
Mentoring programs have grown in popularity throughout the nation as a means by which schools can help students be more successful. Many mentoring programs focus on the transition between middle school and high school. A number of studies have revealed that this transition is the most difficult for students. As a result, the highest grade-level dropout rate occurs during the freshman year of high school. Mentoring programs give students the support they need in order to avoid the pitfalls that result in so many dropouts. Freshmen are often paired with older students who provide support for a variety of issues, from making friends to doing better in school. Mentors also work with younger students to help them develop social skills, communication skills, and study skills. As a result of this work, mentoring programs have much success in improving student achievement. Mentored students attend school more regularly, have fewer discipline problems, hand their homework in on time more often, and have improved class grades.
