Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Duncan District Curriculum

The curriculum provides a comprehensive learning experience for students and is also responsive to changes in society and prepares students for what they will need to know when they graduate. To that end, the technology and sciences curriculum has become more robust in recent years. Engineering concepts are integrated into these subjects as well, providing an additional outlet for the development of problem-solving strategies and opportunities for innovative thinking. This also provides a way to teach math that is applicable to different areas of the sciences.

There is also a strong outdoor and environmental learning program available to students. Students look at the diversity within the biosphere and examine the interdependence of various biological systems. They also learn about energy sources and the various types of sustainable energies that are available. Project-based learning allows students to put their knowledge, hypotheses, and inventions to the test. This helps to achieve the goal of developing the processes of scientific investigation in students.

Duncan District Curriculum Used in Our In-Home Tutoring Programs

The schools of Duncan use the curriculum designed by the province that offers a standards-based approach to learning. The curriculum lays out what it is that students are expected to learn in their subjects each year, these learning expectations are referred to as the Prescribed Learning Outcomes. The Learning Outcomes offer up the basis by which students become proficient in their subjects. This proficiency in the basics allows for students to develop critical thinking, reasoning, problem-solving, and other modes of thinking. Bringing about these thinking skills ensures that students are prepared for academics and career pursuits in next generation opportunities.

We currently cover the following Duncan-area school districts: Cowichan Valley School District, Catholic Independent Schools of British Columbia.

Chalk Talk: The Role of Physical Education Courses

The physical education curriculum gives students an opportunity to learn about personal health and fitness in a more in-depth manner than they experienced in elementary and middle school. Students work on advanced conditioning that improves their cardiovascular, respiratory, and muscular health and fitness. Various physical activities are undertaken, including sports, games, and exercises, in which students must demonstrate proficiency. Students use skills analyses to track their progress in the acquisition of particular skills, and use that information to adjust their learning in order to achieve proficiency. Personal wellness topics, including nutrition and weight control, are discussed as well. Students learn about the various food groups and the foods to avoid in order to have proper balance in their diet. Stress management is also a component of the physical education curriculum, with students learning about various sources of stress, the signs of stress, and strategies for managing stress.
